| (a) All facilities shall adopt a written policy on client searches. Client searches include personal searches and searches of a client's property or sleeping quarters. If client searches are allowed, the facility shall adopt a written search procedure that ensures the protection of client rights. (b) Client searches may only be conducted to protect the health, safety, and welfare of clients, staff, or the facility. (c) Searches shall be conducted in a professional manner that maintains respect and dignity for the client. The facility shall not conduct a directly observed strip search of any client. (d) A witness shall be present during all client searches. (e) Staff and witnesses involved in a personal search must be the same gender as the client. (f) Routine searches of possessions performed when a client returns to a facility may be documented in a central log. All other client searches shall be documented in the client record, including the reason for the search, the result of the search, and the signatures of the individual conducting the search and the witness. |
