(a) Use of Medication. Except upon the order of a physician,
physician assistant, dentist, or nurse practitioner, no stimulant,
tranquilizer, or psychotropic drug shall be administered to residents.
(b) Medication Policy. The governing board of the facility
shall adopt a policy concerning the administration of medication to
residents. The policy shall:
(1) specify which facility personnel are authorized
to administer medication to residents;
(2) include medication that is brought into the facility
by the resident's parent, guardian or custodian, in which case the
facility administrator shall have a written request from the resident's
parent, guardian or custodian to administer the medication and the
medication shall be in the original, properly labeled container; and
(3) include the dispensing of all prescription medication
prescribed to the resident during the resident's stay in the facility.
(c) Non-prescription Medication. Only staff who have
had appropriate training in the administration of medication shall
administer non-prescription medication (i.e., over-the-counter medication).
The medication shall be administered according to the product instructions
unless otherwise instructed by the health services coordinator. A
health services coordinator who orders deviations from the product's
directions shall be a health care professional. Deviations and the
reason for the deviations shall be documented.
(d) Documentation. Written documentation of all dispensed
medication shall be maintained.
